UPH Painting Museum

The UPH (Pelita Harapan Univeristy) Painting museum is located among high-rise buildings in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang. The 400-meter-wide museum which is exactly on the 3rd floor of Matahari Tower stores more than 700 paintings, works of some eminent national and international painters who put Indonesia as the topic of their paintings. They are Raden Saleh, Affandi, A. Sudjono, Barli, Wakidi, AD Pirous, Widayat, Zaini, Srihadi Soedarsono, Agus Djaya, Trubus, Mochtar Apin, Sudjana Kerton, Ivan Sagito, But Mochtar, Hendra Gunawan, Dede Eri Supria, Nasiah Djamin, Walter Speis, R. Bommet, Willem Dooijewaard, JD Van Herwerden, etc. There are not many people know that Lippo Karawaci Tangerang has a painting museum with the beautiful, high quality paintings. People can visit the museum by using the shuttle bus Lippo Karawaci from Grogol, Blok M and Wisma Graha Citra on Jalan Gatot Subroto.
The museum, officially opened in Matahari tower on April 24, 2000 (exactly on the Asia Physics Olympyc) not only exhibits the painting collections but also stores either the international literature book collections on art, architecture, museum affairs and history or the national and international painting exhibition catalogues. The museum also stores the database on the national painters.
The museum collaboration with the member of the Heritage Society providing the description of the painting collections. The painting references are available in the museum so that the painters can see the technology and the culture of paintings. Every painting has its description so that the visitors understand the painting they watch. The idea of the museum is from the national famous businessman, the owner of Grup Lippo, James Riady. Therefore, all the paintings exhibited in this museum were both Mochtar Riady's collections and his son, James Riady's. Their painting collections were granted to the UPH museum.
Other painting collectors lent their collections to the museum. As soon as you enter the museum you will watch the work of Walter Spies, the Moscow-born, German painter who wandered in Java and Bali. His 1924-made painting called Desa on Dijeng Plateau/Desa mit Sumbing describing the village situation in the morning in Dijeng plateau.
Some paintings were once exhibited in Singapore and Japan, one of which is the work of Ivan Sagito with Immortal Eternity (1997). And Some paintings are purchased from the famous Auction House "Christies" in Singapore, such as the "Lions and a Snake Fighting Outside a Grotto in a Tropical Landscape" (1839) belonging to the Indonesian well-known painter, Raden Saleh and Keris Dance (1934), belonging to R. Bonnet. Another impressive painting is the work of AAG De Sobrat called Bali Life (1931) which was once exhibited in 1931 in the Dutch colony era held at the Immigration Office on jalan Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta. The painting tells about the life of the Balinese people. You also can see the two extraordinary paintings belonging to Affandi and Barli Campuan Ubud (1952), two of which were painted in Europe when they both were there in 1952-1953.
The paintings are placed next to each other and make the exhibition become more remarkable. Others are the works of Le Mayeur with Balinese Women (1950), using the light in the painting, S. Sudjono, inspired by the vila situation in Puncak combined with the Bali and Sumatra nature with Menunggu Kapal Berlabuh / "awaiting the ship come" (1970 ), and Mochtar Apin Rahwana and Shinta (1963)
